HOPE XXL is calling for applications for the Triple-A Summit taking place from May 28 – 31, 2014 in The Hague, The Netherlands. The event brings together young people (Aged 18 – 29) from Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Americas to develop their vision on the future.

Participation is free of charge and includes the programme, accommodation and meals.

The deadline for applications is February 16, 2014.

Social Entrepreneurs Transforming Africa (SET Africa) is now inviting applications from young social innovators in Anglophone Africa who are founders or co-founders of ventures with a social mission to apply for the SET Africa fellowship run by MUBS. Fellows under this programme will be trained in entrepreneurship and leadership.

Young Global Leaders

Nominate a Young Global Leader:   

The Forum of Young Global Leaders has established a comprehensive selection process for identifying and selecting the most exceptional leaders 40 years of age or younger.  Only the very best candidates are selected and all efforts are extended to create a truly representative body. Reflecting the diversity of stakeholders, the Young Global Leaders include leaders from politics, business, civil society, academia, and arts and culture across seven geographic regions. Together, they form a unique community that can dramatically affect the lives of future generations and craft innovative responses to address global and regional challenges.

  • He/she is 40 years of age or younger (to be eligible for the nomination and selection process of the Class of 2015, the candidate must have been born on or after 1 January 1975).
  • He/she has a recognized record of extraordinary achievement and a proven track record of substantial leadership experience. Typically, this means 5-15 years of outstanding professional work experience and a clear indication of playing a substantial leadership role for the rest of his or her career.

The deadline to submit nominations for the class of 2015 is June 30 2014.

Youth unemployment

“Global youth unemployment is estimated to stand at 73.4 million in 2013, an increase of 3.5 million since 2007 and 0.8 million above the level in 2011. The global youth employment to-population ratio is projected to be 41.4 per cent in 2018.” (Global Employment Trend for Youth 2013: ILO)

“Africa presents the highest proportion of illiterate youth in the world, estimated at about 25 percent. Estimates suggest that about 133 million young people, accounting for over 50 percent of the youth population in Africa, are uneducated.” [International Labor Organization (ILO): 2011]

Fellowships, Awards, Scholarships

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations. Award candidates must be nominated by their current school or college/university.

The Gulen Institute Youth Platform has announced its fifth international essay contest, which is open to all high school students in grades 9th through 12th currently enrolled in public or private schools from across the nation and abroad.  Students are invited to address global challenges and propose potential solutions based on their own research and experience.  Contest winners will also be invited to participate in a platform held in Washington DC, at which they will have the opportunity to share their ideas and listen to their peers from around the world.  With this program, We hope to provide a chance for youth from around the world to engage each other in discussion and to advance cross-cultural understanding.

Topic of this year is:

“What role should state and non-profit agencies play in the education of disadvantaged youth who are not realizing their potential?”

Deadline for essay submission is December 20, 2013.

Top35-Under35CEO Awards aims to encourage and promote entrepreneurship amongst young Africans. Annually, the programme will highlight and provide recognition to 35 young entrepreneurs under the age of 35 who are making change happen through their entrepreneurial endeavours.

Who are the young entrepreneurs shaping the future of Africa? These are the people that the Top35-Under35CEO Awards seeks to identify and promote.

Join the Dialogue on March 13 and 14, 2014 in Germany!

As a Delegate you join the World Business Dialogue in March 2014 in Cologne, Germany.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is open to  residents and citizens of a Sub-Saharan Africa country. Applicants must be a first-time applicant to the University of Toronto who has not yet begun university study elsewhere. If you are a transfer student, you are not eligible for the Program.

In order to be eligible, you must:

  • be a resident and a graduating high school student of a country within Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • demonstrate financial need correspondent to that of the lowest two quintiles of your country;
  • have very strong academic results within your school system;
  • have a record of leadership and extracurricular involvement;
  • maintain a strong desire to return to Africa to assist and work towards enhanced regional socioeconomic development;
  • be graduating from a recognized secondary school, or have completed the necessary academic requirements; and
  • fulfill the necessary English requirements (dependent on country).
